Carol Alte Noschkes was born on 9 February 1911 New York, New York. Carol was given the Hebrew name of Chaya Alte bat Yitzchak Ha Cohan. She was named after her maternal grandmother, Chaya Eisner Landes.2 She was the daughter of Isidore Noschkes and Helen Landes. Carol Alte Noschkes moved with Isidore Noschkes and Helen Noschkes circa 1918 to East 165th Street, Bronx, New York.3 Carol Alte Noschkes moved with Isidore Noschkes and Helen Noschkes circa 1922 to 529 West 180th Street, New York, New York; This was in the Washington Heights section which in those days looked much like the Bronx with a few apartment houses, a number of private homes, and excellent schools. The kids attended P.S. 132 at 183rd Street and the Synagogue was at Wadsworth Avenue and 178th Street where both boys were Bar Mitzvahed.
Simon and Debora, his paternal grandparents, lived on the same floor but Helen kept the children away from them except for special occasions because Debora had tuberculosis.3 When Carol was 19, she came down with appendicitis. The appendix burst and this led to severe anemia which plagued her throughout the rest of her life and was instrumental in causing her death. Her illness led to her father's death that same year, when he was told she might not survive.4
Carol Alte Noschkes appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of New York New York, at 529 West 180th Street in the household of her parents Isidore Noschkes and Helen Noschkes.5
I have discovered through meeting Luke Rothman and uncovering an entire new branch of our tree, that Carol was best friends with Claire Schecter. In 2008, I received an answer on the jewishgen website. I had posted a note "Searching for Dora Landes Roller, Helen's half sister". Luke responded and while telling me about his grandmother, Claire mentioned that her grandmother had a half sister. This half sister had a daughter who was Claire's best friend but sher died of peritonitis in her ealy 20's.
As of 23 June 1935, Carol lived at 611 West 177th Street, New York.6
Carol Alte Noschkes died on 13 September 1936 in a Hospital at age 25 due to an incompatible blood transfusion.2 She died on the Hebrew date of 26th Elul 5698.2,7 She was buried Lemberger Congregation: Block 29, Path 14-15, Queens, New York. Burial record comment on jewishgen, reads: beloved wife, daughter-sister. Parents are listed as Isidore and 29-14-K/L-2-10.4,1

Chaim Aharon Landes
d. 23 December 1913
Chaim Aharon Landes was possibly a student or a Rabbi. He lived in Buczacz.
Chaim Aharon Landes married Chaya Eisner, daughter of Mendel Eisner and Helen? Jacobs, circa 1864.
Luke Rothman has found info that Chaya seems to have been married to Moses Grabstein before Chaim. They had at least one child, Dora Grabstein. This would make sense in that I knew that Helen had a half sister named Dora who married someone named Jack Roller. This agrees with Luke. Luke is the grandson of Sadie, daughter or Dora.
On June 1st, 1908, Chaim wrote to his daughter:
To daughter Ettie from father:
My beloved, dearest, sweet child, Ettiya, my soul. My dear child, I cannot describe to you how much pleasure your dear letter brought to me. But I am alone and I fear that God does not find me worthy enough to come to the wedding. As you know, I have no means to be with you my dear children. I always hoped dear children that I would be able to be at your wedding because you were always my best, and my most loved child. But dear, what can I do?.... and during the night I lie in bed, my eyes full of tears, my dear child. You think that I have forgotten you... I didn't forget you brecause you are my best child and my dearest child. My dear child, my heart longs for you, but my strength is dwindling bitterly.
...Dear child, this letter is not written with ink but with tears, yes, and I hope that God gives me the strength to withstand it.... I conclude my writing with Mazel tov. I send you greetings and kisses many thousands of times from me, your dear and unforgettable father who is hoping to see you at least once more. Chaim Landes
On the occasion of her wedding, he also calligraphied a poem called "Gluck Auf". The translations is:
Good luck!
Happiness wreathe your days,
be joyful and cheerful in your mind.
Without pain and without plague
your most beautiful life shall be.
May peace dwell in your breast,
far from any suffering on earth.
Live in undisturbed joy!
Walk happily and contentedly
long through life here.
May joy be your lot in this world,
Blessings may bloom around you.
Wishing the happiness fulfillment
of your faithful father,
Chaim Landez Buczacz.

I have received notification from the American Red Cross that Max and Rose were evacuated to Siberia (see their info) on july 2, 1941 but it is unclear if the two girls and Nachama were evacuated there also. The Red Cross could not find any information on the three of them although I would guess that they all were evacuated together..4
