Mechel Pertzelai
b. circa 1856, d. 13 May 1928
Father | Hershur Pertzelai1 b. c 1825 |
Mother | Mindyai (?) |
Mechel Pertzelai was born circa 1856 Federeck, Ukraine, Russia. Federeck was a very small town located close to Volochisk.1 He was the son of Hershur Pertzelai and Mindyai (?)1
Mechel Pertzelai married Fradel Shulman, daughter of Elya Nachman Shilman and Malka (?), circa 1880 in Ukraine, Russia.2
Mechel and Frudel had 12 children, 8 survived.
Mechel was a forwarder (or expediter) who moved merchandise across the border to Austria. The border was located right next to Volochisk. According to Samuel Trugman, he always tried to make a living for his family but it was very difficult. It was often told to me, as I grew up, that his daughter's (Ida, Molly, Goldie) often "smuggled" goods across the border by strapping it to their bodies!
Ida had also mentioned that the family was fairly well-to-do in the community as they had one of the few indoor bathrooms. Someone would come weekly to clean it out as there was no true indoor plumbing.1
Mechel Pertzelai and Frudel Pertzelai immigrated to New York on 22 February 1921. "Machel Porcelaj", age 60, a merchant; his wife "Fradla", age 60, housewife; his daughter "Godla", age 37, housewife; son Chaim, age 19, workman; and 3 other relatives: Perla age 35, housewife; Bina age 3, and Chajcia Parcelayn, age 16 all immigrated together on the Aquitania from Cherbourg, Manche, France. They left no relatives in Wolochisk and were going to New York to son, Trugman, 1390 Boston Road. (As an aside - I do not have any idea who Perla, Bina and Chajcia were. The "son Trugman" was his son-in-law, my grandfather, Samuel Trugman).2,3
His name was legally changed to Persily.
Between 1922 and 1925, Mechel and Fradel lived at 767 Jennings Street, Bronx, New York.2 Mechel Persily died on 13 May 1928 in New York City. He died on the Hebrew date of the 23rd of Iyar.4 He was buried Riverside Cemetery, New Jersey. His headstone reads:
Here lies an honest man who died of old age. Yechiel Mechel ben Tsvi Itsik. (According to Martha Lev-Zion, Yechiel is his Hebrew name and Mechel his Russian... there is also the question of Hersur vs, Tsvi Itsik???). Michael ben Tzvi Yairon 23 Iyar 5475
According to Riverside Cemetery: grave 5138, Michael Persily, located in Chevra Nusach Sfard of the Bronx. The cemetery is off of Rt 4 in Lodi, NJ. Make the first right after the gate, then continue about 50 feet. The graves are on the right.5
