Irving Jaffe1

b. 5 September 1906, d. March 1981
Irving Jaffe was born on 5 September 1906 New York, New York.2
Irving won the Olympic Gold Medal in Speed Skating in the 1928 and 1932 Olympics.

From "The Complete book fo the Olympics by David Wallechinsky":

1928 St Moritz: Officially this race never took place. After seven of the ten entrants had completed their heats, the temperature rose suddenly, and the officials in charge ordered the day's times cancelled and the races rerun. by the time a final decision had been reached, the Norweigians, who had already made it clear that they considered Jaffee the champion, had gone home, so the race was cancelled. As far as the skaters were concerned, the matter had been settled after the first heat, when Jaffe came from behind to nip Eversen just before the finish line. However sport historians generally consider tyhe 1928, 10,000 meters to have been a non-event.

1932 Lake Placid: the turmoil that marred the 1932 speed skating competitions culminated in disputes that broke out during the heats of the 10,000 meters.... The final race was slow and tactical, as all eight stayed in a bunch until the last lap. Jaffe won by five yards, but the finish was so close that only two yards separated Ballangrud in second place and Evansen in sixth.

During the depression, Jaffe was forced to pawn his two gold medals. Unfortunatley, times were so tough that even the pawnshop went out of business and Jaffe never saw his medals again...

Irving Jaffe died in March 1981 at age 74.2
