Nuchem Messing
b. circa 1848, d. 2 October 1948
Nuchem Messing was born circa 1848.1 According to Stanley Winton by the 1880's Nuchem Messing owned the leading bakery in Odessa (Russian Ukraine). Because his wife came from Austria (Lemberg or Lwow, Poland) his enemies (competitors?) convinced the secret police that he was an Austrian spy and he was jailed. Friends bribed the sailors to permit him to escape and he took his wife (and Leon?) to Galicia. While there, Stanley's mother, Olga was born. They left Poland c. 1900 via Hamburg for NY.1
